I’m not entirely sure if and how often this outfit has been mentioned either on GH or anywhere else for that matter, but as I’m sure that some of my fellow huggers and colleagues are more than well aware – the Dover book store is simply a gem when it comes to sourcing copy-free imagery.
In their own words – “Since 1986 we have been selling the unique Dover Pictorial Archive range of sourcebooks here in Covent Garden. As specialists in historical graphic and commercial art and illustration, we are dedicated to providing the best possible range of Copyright and Permission Free material in book form and on CD.” From my last experience the staff there are also extremely friendly and really helpful, especially when it comes to looking for something specific which you have in mind, whatever that might be – regardless of how dated or obscure. What is interesting is once (if ever) you get to familiarise yourself with their collection, the situation becomes like when you buy a car and all of a sudden your radar seems to pick up on the same model/colour everywhere you go? Soon you’ll begin to recognise Dover Book’s material in even the darkest corners of the art and design landscape. Remixed and recontenxtualised; buried under layers of paint and photoshop layers. So if time doesn’t permit you to scout for second-hand book sales or barzaars be sure to check them out.

Nice one Graeme! Wish I’d known about this place earlier! Good tip.
Yeah serious! If only I’d known this is there while I was there…
